Elizabeth Taylor´s Wedding Dresses Auctioned.

29 Sep

Fashionista brides everywhere will be watching as Elizabeth Taylor´s wedding dresses go to auction this December at Christie´s in New York City. The fashion icon and two time Oscar winner’s clothing and accessories, including the dresses, will be sold to the highest bidder. The bridal gowns will be put under the hammer along with almost 400 dresses, shoes, handbags, and other accessories, including Taylor´s iconic jewellry, some of which was designed by the actress herself.

Although the jewellry, such as the ruby and diamond necklace featuring a 16th century pearl may bring in the most money, the highlights of the auction are bound to be the two wedding dresses, one worn in 1964, the first time she married Richard Burton, a marriage which lasted 10 years, and the other from 1975, the second marriage that only lasted 11 months.  Her 1964 dress, being the more famous of the two, is expected to go for anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000!!

The dress became a piece of history after Taylor and Burton’s very public affair. The two were followed closely before, after and during their 10 year marriage as many considered them to be the first “it couple”. Though Taylor was known for being fickle, having been married 8 times to 7 husbands, her marriage to Burton was both the longest and most popular amongst her fans.

Hollywood’s most passionate and intense love story began in 1961 on the set of Cleopatra when screen siren Elizabeth Taylor met her handsome leading man Richard Burton. Despite both being married at the time to other people – she was wed to fourth husband Eddie Fisher, and he was with his first wife Sybil Williams – the couple soon fell in love, and their subsequent affair caused something of a scandal of the day.
Elizabeth for her first wedding to Richard, wore an empire-style chiffon gown in daffodil yellow designed by Irene Sharaff, who’d done her costumes for Cleopatra. She finished the look off with a platinum-set Bulgari pendant, featuring a 18.61 carat emerald and diamond that she wore as a brooch, presented to her by her husband on their engagement. In her hair, the award-winning star wore lilies of the valley and white Roman hyacinths.

For her second wedding, held in the remote village of Kasane, Botswana in Africa, she wore green with lace frills and guinea fowl feathers.

While Elizabeth and Richard’s weddings were not grand affairs, nor did their marriages stand the test of time, to this day theirs is still considered one of Hollywood’s most iconic romances.

Skin Care Tips for the Run-Up to the BIG Day!

28 Sep

You´ve found the gorgeous dress, you´ve chosen the flowers, you´ve booked the hairdresser and decided on your hairstyle, but there is still something important to prepare for your wedding… Your skin! To look your best on your big day, it´s essential to prepare your skin months before so here are some tips and tricks to help you:

– Set an appointment with a dermatologist as early as possible to address any skin issues you may have. He/she can also recommend regular facials or peels and the best skincare regime for you to follow for that picture-perfect skin for all them close ups! Even if your skin breaks out the day before your wedding, something like a cortisone or triamcinolone shot can be done to bring down the swelling almost immediately.

– Start a good cleaning routine. You should be using a multi-step system including; a cleanser appropriate for your skin-type in the mornings, make-up remover and cleanser at night, daily moisturiser mornings and evenings, and an exfoliant or mask once or twice a week. Avoid toners containing alcohol, even if you have oily skin, as they can dry the surface of your skin, blocking impurities beneath the surface.

– Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Find a moisturiser that fits your skin type (even if you have oily skin you still need to moisturise, just with an oil-free cream) and makes your skin look and feel soft.

 – If you take birth-control medication, talk to your doctor about which kind is best for your skin. Changing birth-control brands a few months before may make a dramatic difference in your skin.

– Follow a healthy diet with plenty of veg, fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and “superskin foods” supplemented with a daily multivitamin. The association between diet and acne isn’t clear — but research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in saturated fats and carbohydrates may promote younger looking skin. Also, even though you´ll have heard this a thousand times, drink lots of water! Aim for at least 8 to 10 glasses daily, it will help clear up blemishes and make your skin more luminous. Keep a bottle of water on your desk at work and a bottle next to you in the evenings at home.

– Get the sufficient amount of beauty sleep every day and never sleep in makeup.

– Limit bath time.Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Take shorter showers and use warm, rather than hot, water..

– Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Obviously, this is easier said than done as planning the prefect wedding is more than stressful but set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list by asking for help from friends and family (all of my married friends have told me the same thing, try not to manage everything on the day of your wedding, surround yourself with people you trust, let them know your wishes, and TRUST them to carry out their tasks) and make time to do the things you enjoy. Yoga and Pilate classes are ideal and also I find an evening in with a glass of red wine, a face mask and good film, great for relaxing.. 🙂 The results may be more dramatic than you expect..

– Exercise a bit everyday, even if it´s just going for a walk or a quick run, to get the blood pumping around your body and oxygenating your skin. Ideally join a gym for spinning or swimming classes or take up an outdoor sport, any cardio exercise will do really! Also sit in a steam room post workout to draw out toxins and rev up microcirculation.

– Test new products 2-3 months before (fake lashes, self tanner, make up..). This includes sleeping pills, you might want to take one the night before your big day to make sure you sleep a good 8 hours, so test them first, some women get a Benadryl “hangover”.. Waxing, threading, bleaching, etc must be done at least four days before the big day, or 2 weeks before if it´s facial hair you are removing, to give your skin time to settle down and to combat any allergic reactions that may occur.

Hopefully, this will help you on your way to looking radiant when he lifts that veil and glowing in the photographs! More soon on home-made skin treatments and “superskin” foods

Milan Fashion Week

25 Sep

It´s Milan fashion week and where better to get outfit ideas from??! From guests to bridesmaids, or even just for color inspiration, here are a few of the designs seen this week..

Pisa-high heels, studded or glitter starfish and seahorse motifs began popping up throughout the Versace collection on a pastel palate of light greens, baby blues and soft whites. At times, softer elements were introduced, such as light pleated layers on skirts and toga-like dresses.

Karl Lagerfeld offered a version of Milanese femininity at Fendi. Wide straight-waist jackets were paired with high-waisted a-line skirts in soft greys, pale blues and camel. Throw some breezy striped cotton ensembles and floral appliqués in, and it all made for fresh yet decisively feminine silhouettes, perfect for a fresh, outdoor wedding guest look.

D&G explored one simple theme: scarves. On shoes and hats, even as belts! Giant scarves became dresses and tiny ones kept sandals strapped onto feet. The collection consisted of head-to-toe silk looks: dresses mid-way between cocktail and beach wear in bright yellows, pinks and turquoise. Floor length, airy cotton dresses worn off the shoulders, suggested a Mediterranean touch, great for beach weddings.

I´d buy most of these outfits if I could but the budget can´t be stretched that far haha! Still it´s nice to look and I´m sure most of you will find something to inspire them 🙂

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
