Summer Weddings

The summer is almost as popular as spring wedding-wise, especially in the north of Europe, and it´s no surprise as the possibilities colour, food and flower wise are endless! Here are a few of my favourite wedding touches:

– Summer is the best time to celebrate an outdoor wedding, drape the palm trees in fairy lights for a beautiful evening beach wedding or hang starry bundles of lights wrapped in and out of wicker balls or string glass candle lanterns filled with a thick layer of fresh, fragrant rose petals to provide a dreamy atmosphere at an evening garden reception.

– Any color looks fantastic at a summer wedding, especially the bright ones! A block color such as red, yellow, orange or purple look great against a white backdrop, or why not try tempering all of the daring hues with a earth-toned background?

Buying local flowers is the way to go, remember, blooms that are in season in your area will more likely survive a long day in a bouquet. This could range from Orchids, Peonies and Roses, to more exotic flowers such as Nigella, Celosia and Lillies. If you want a totally different bouquet, try one made with seashells for an original summer look.

For your wedding dress, choose a light fabric that breathes, such as silk, organza, linen, chiffon, or crepe and opt for shorter skirts. If you can’t resist the heavy traditional ball gown, wear it during the ceremony and then change into an elegant sheath for the reception. I also love the idea of butterfly or flower patterned heels!  Grooms look better in lighter suits in greys and creams in summer too.

– Provide heat relief for your guests. Make sure an outdoor venue offers some shade or air-conditioning, before the ceremony have an usher pass out small ice-cold hand towels across the rows, scatter decorative tubs or baskets filled with bottles of water and sunscreen near the ceremony site.

– Lighter fare works at summer weddings, and buffets are ideal. Sesame seed-spiked macaroons with a center of smoked salmon, shallots, and creme fraiche and shots of gazpacho served in carved-out cucumber cups for starters, fresh seafood or a barbecue combined with seasonal fruit and veg for the main meal and mini sorbet wedding cakes or wine smoothies for dessert.

– Use fresh fruits and vegetables for your centerpieces such as satsumas and cumquats in your flower arrangements, or simply fill a large vase with bright yellow lemons or ripe tomatoes. Shell butterflies also make perfect accents scattered on a table as decorations.

– Pick a wedding cake that summons a taste of summer with in-season berries and fruits and consider offering a summer-inspired side with your cake such as ice cream or a handful of chocolate-covered strawberries.

– Classic summer favors like flip-flops or fans are always a good gift for your guests, but if you want something different, how about edible cookie bags with fruit and candy inside?

– Original little touches: During the reception, adults can help themselves at a snow cone station stocked with cups, crushed ice, and mojito, peach daiquiri, cosmo, and margarita cocktail syrups, or at a ‘grown up’ ice cream stand with alcoholic ice cream floats, it´s sure to be a wedding to be remembered!

Basically just make sure your guests (and yourself!) don´t get too hot and enjoy all that summer brings to a great celebration 🙂
