Your Four-Legged Friend at your Wedding!

16 Jul

Your wedding day is one where you share your love for your partner with all your friends, family and… pets? Including your pet in your wedding day is not exactly a new thing, take a look at some old paintings, you´ll see that dogs showed up in more than one ceremony (cats were less popular but there are some records of them!), but you need to bear a few things in mind if this is what you are planning on doing:

– Be mindful of your dog’s temperament. If your dog isn´t keen on big crowds and you are having more than 25 guests, find some other way to include him or her in the wedding, maybe posing with you in your engagement photo?

– If you think your dog can handle the wedding, make sure your venue is dog friendly (most churches and city halls won´t allow dogs). At the same time, make sure you check with your officiant; some may not preside over a ceremony that includes pets. Bear in mind that most indoor venues don’t allow dogs for health or safety reasons. Outdoor venues are sometimes more lenient, but the having your dog at your wedding works best for a backyard affair, especially because he or she will feel more comfortable at home.

– Some people are allergic or afraid of dogs so let your guests know beforehand so they can take precautions.

– Your dog needs to be comfortable being handled by someone else as you should appoint a designated dog handler to make sure that your dog is never left alone (especially near the food!).

– Decide how your dog is going to participate in the ceremony. He/she could walk you down the aisle, walk with the bridesmaids, be a ring bearer.. the possibilities are endless! Make sure he/she matches the wedding theme, find inspiration in the above photos 🙂

– Remember to bring your dog supplies (food, water, treats, brush, whatever you need).

I hope these points help you decide, my cat sadly passed away a few years ago at the grand old age of 19, but I definitely would have included her in my big day 🙂

And although it is not the norm for couples to include their dogs in their weddings, you are not alone, celebrities do it too! For her London wedding to Gavin Rossdale, singer Gwen Stefani was escorted down the aisle by her sheepdog Winston, who was decked out in a rose-covered collar and lead, and actor Adam Sandler had his dogs Matzoball (pulled down the aisle in a wagon) and Meatball at his Malibu wedding. Meatball was his “best dog” and was dressed in a tux with a yarmulke on his head.
