Virgin boss Richard Branson gave away his daughter Holly at her wedding on Tuesday, expressing his delight beforehand on his blog with pictures of his own wedding on Necker Island, 22 years ago. Holly, 29, married shipbroker, Fred Andrews, in the same spot and on the very same day her parents married in 1989.
The wedding plans were almost scuppered after a fire broke out at the £60 million private Caribbean island this year, with the blaze completely destroying the Great House. The fire started in the early hours of August 22, after a lightning strike by the tropical storm Irene. The eight-bedroom home was left gutted by the 800ft flames. Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet, who was staying on the island at the time with her two children and ex-boyfriend, famously carried Richard’s 90-year-old mother Eve down a flight of stairs. But Necker Island has sentimental value for Holly Branson, so nothing was going to stop her wedding Fred there yesterday. The doctor apparently married “under the stars on the ruin of the main house”. Richard Branson bought the island in 1979 for £180,000 however Necker Island is now estimated to be worth in the region of £60 million.
Around 100 guests attended at the nuptials, although only 22 could be housed on the island in the six cottages that survived the blaze and on Sir Richard’s catamaran. Holly, who is being groomed to takeover her father’s business empire, said she wanted her wedding to be an occasion for close friends and family and not a celebrity filled event. Among the guests were Princesses Beatrice, 23, and Eugenie, 21, along with their mother, the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. The Queen gave the young royals permission to excuse themselves from a pre-Christmas lunch with the rest of the family at Buckingham Palace.
The music at the ceremony including a spine-chilling performance via Skype by a young South African girl by the name of Cleo Megan Filander. Sir Richard posted a video of the song on his blog, the girl can be seen holding up a personal message to his daughter and new husband that read: “To Holly & Freddie. Wishing you many happy years together. Lots of love Dad”.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
